Hydrogen can make Canada an energy superpower again

Not an expert but from what I understand the cost-effectiveness of hydrogen exports via ships is extremely low. In most cases it would be cheaper to produce it in the importing region using electricity. This severely limits the market for international trade in hydrogen. It seems likely that it will be nowhere near as large as the trade in oil and gas. We could export to the US using pipelines but we still need some kind of competitive advantage for them to want to import it from us instead of producing it themselves (this also applies to other countries if we assume marine shipping is viable). They already have tons of natural gas that could be used to produce hydrogen. We have more hydro but if we move towards intensive electrification of light duty transport and other sectors then we won't have a surplus to export as electricity or to use in hydrogen production for export. We have no advantage in producing hydrogen using renewables like wind and solar. We have a couple of technology companies that could generate some export revenues through licensing. There is an opportunity here but it is nowhere near "energy superpower" level.
