Oh, I been there a while. Since I helped my friend "cheat" on designing one of many DARPA submissions back in the 90s. And one device, I just left the design specs and outline for a proof of concept device for any of hundreds to swipe. It turned into these eventually. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phraselator

That level of device should have been the proof of concept for a whole series of translation machines that were pretty much off the shelf tech in 99-00. Instead, it ended up being the end product, a really really hard fail version of a device I could have bodged together in maybe 3-4 months.

But it was amusing as their backstory has changed at least 4 times over almost 2 decades. They bought out patent rights for a similar device, and got together a BS backstory so it wasn't just something someone ripped off from an open source design left on a hacker board. lol!

Not ticked off because "I was robbed!" or something as silly, but because they couldn't even get together a phase three device before smartphone translation obsoleted the whole thing.

Way it goes though. So, moral of the story, always leak your disruptive device to someone competent enough to bring it to fruition. Or lazy enough to shop it out to enough people until they find someone competent enough. lol!
