Ian McKellen responding to fans who were worried that the PJ trilogy would mistreat the books and make too many changes.

As a teenager I had two theatre ticket subscriptions. One theatre was known for their unusual interpretations of plays and it could be a bit hit or miss, but when they got it right it was brilliant. The other was more traditional and in a way more consistent because of that. Both were great, just different approaches. But every time the first one would do a well-known play (some of them Shakespeare) there would be an article in the local newspaper saying how they completely missed the mark and interpreted it wrong, basically lol. I feel like these impulses also exist in theatre criticism, people are just more used to the fact that there will be different versions of a play because that's just the nature of the medium, so the reaction is less severe maybe.
