I yearn to live in a world without nuclear weapons as much as anyone else, it's really important that people understand that it would be absolute fucking humanity-threatening madness to ban nuclear weapons at this point in history.

I agree. Nuclear weapons are one of the only reasons we haven't had another world war. The threat of mutually assured destruction is an amazing pacification tool.

The cold war that we are currently engaged in has pushed technology beyond anything our previous civilisations could even dream of. The never ending quest to develop an I.W.I.N. Button has been great for the medical industry and technology as a whole.
