ICE held an American man in custody for 1,273 days. He’s not the only one who had to prove his citizenship

This is completely fucking insane:

A decade of Justice Department records analyzed by the Times show the success of defendants making U.S. citizenship claims more than doubled if they had an attorney.

U.S. Citizens shouldn't have their citizenship depend on if they can get an attorney or not.

I have a suggestion to fix this: There should be a strict liability criminal law against trying to deport a citizen, or ICE taking a citizen into custody. (We can have an exception if the perp can prove they were tricked by the person they tried to detain/deport). I know this is harsh, but we should never deport citizens. We must be 100% sure that they are not citizens before deporting them. I know some people don't like strict liability laws, but as long as we have them I think we should put them to use!
