I'd love to get a bird. Can r/Pets help me out a bit? I want to be a good owner.

Hi there! I'm no expert on birds but I owned a Hispaniolan Amazon for about 6 years as a teenager before I had to give her away due to a move (if it was up to me I would have chosen her over a new place but I was only a teenager so obviously my parents had the final say). She was the sweetest most loving little bird, but she was also feisty haha! My mom just brought her home in a cage one day when I was about 13 and I just embraced it. We had a dog in addition to her and they got along except that sometimes the parrot (her name was Anita) would chase my dog and the dog was afraid of her. It was pretty hilarious.

Anyway parrots, specifically, like a lot of room to roam. When we weren't home we kept her in a cage but if I was home, she was out of her cage and under FULL supervision. We had a closed balcony because we lived on a first floor and she would just love to climb up on the rails and watch the world, especially if it was raining! There was no way to make her happier than a good rain shower.

Parrots are fairly destructive though. If I left out say, a wooden pencil, it would be destroyed within 2 minutes because she would think it's one of her toys. Also, she was noisy. Under regular circumstances it was tolerable but mine was fairly attached to me so, no lie, whenever I left the room she would start SCREECHING. Like, full blown sharp parrot screeches. We had a spare room where we would keep her cage in so when she would start screeching and we had to leave, we would just keep the room closed. But even then, it was just loud.

Her food was completely inexpensive. It's mostly just nuts and sunflower seeds and cheap ingredients like that. She would always appreciate walnuts and peanuts and cashews but she especially loved the sunflower seeds. She was so comfortable with me that sometimes if I was eating at the dining table, she would use the tablecloth to climb up to the table, just WALK on my plate and help herself haha! Most times though, I would just take a little coaster with her food on it and put it on the table so she could feel like she's eating with the rest of the family.

I miss her so much! If you are interested in a bird like her or a Sun Conure or any parrot like that, I say go for it! They're easy to maintain, and sure, cleaning up bird poop is annoying, but I would do it all over again for my little Anita.
