Idaho, USA - A Christian senator will walk out if a Hindu prayer opens the Idaho Senate this week. His arguments is "They worship cows". He needs to look at his own faith who believes in talking snakes & donkeys, A seven headed dragon, A person who lived inside a whale for three days and survive

I just emailed him:

Good evening Senator Vick,

Let me begin my email by making several points: I understand that you are the Vice Chair of the Resources and Environment subcommittee and I appreciate all that you do in your endeavors to protect the beauty of - and bountiful harvest from - the beautiful state of Idaho. I was lucky enough to serve with someone who was originally from the western part of Idaho, near Spokane, WA, who spoke very highly of your state. I also genuinely and truly respect your right to a freedom of religion, and I understand that you are a member of the Mormon Church, a faith that you have every right to worship under our First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

I only wish to ask you a simple question; If someone had proposed an invocation from a different Judeo-Christian faith than yours, would it be the same issue? Suppose I was to be honored with reading the opening prayer at Idaho's state senate tomorrow, as a veteran and natural born American, would you be opposed to it if I were to recite, say, The Lord's Prayer? I understand that Mormons do not recite the Lord's prayer, and I believe I understand the general gist of why (although I must confess that, while I am generally familiar with Mormonism, I don't understand specifically why The Lord's Prayer isn't more prominent in your Church).

I understand that, as a generality, this country was built on, as you put it, "...the Judeo-Christian not only religion but work ethic, and I don't want to see that undermined." And yet, Senator Vick, you also point to the fact that "There was a time in Idaho history when Mormons were not allowed to pray in the Legislature - nor were they allowed to hold office or vote because Mormons were not considered Christians. I think we've come a long way since then." Why does any other religion not deserve the same right as yours, be it Christian or any other faith? The separation of church and state is not expressly written into the constitution, but it was a powerful principle that Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and other founding fathers wanted our country to be based upon (and indeed is an idea which existed in America since Roger Williams coined the term "[A] hedge or wall of separation between the garden of the church and the wilderness of the world" in 1644, 186 years before your faith was officially founded in Fayette, NY in April of 1830).

My only hope with this email, Senator Vick, is that in some capacity, however small or insignificant, I can convince you to broaden your horizons or tolerance in some way. What makes this country so great, and what convinced me to give years of service and place my life into Lady Liberty's hands, is the beautiful, wonderful ideal that every single person who comes here can aspire to be a true human being, free of all judgment and persecution. I urge you, in the future, to try to be like the men and women before you who allowed members of your faith to express themselves, and in turn allow Idaho (and the rest of the United States) to hear from and respect any and all faiths when it comes to this matter.

Respectfully, Petty Officer Third Class /u/fartxparty, USN.
