If birth control is 99% effective, does that mean I’m at risk of getting a girl pregnant 1 out of every 100 times we have sex?

It’s 98 out of 100 couples will not be pregnant if they use a male condom correctly every time. In real life averages, 82 out of 100 couples will not be pregnant after a year.

The reality is that you should be using an oral contraceptive or better yet an IUD (intrauterine device). Condoms are best for avoiding sexually transmitted diseases. 18% of couples getting pregnant each year is pretty bad! I believe about 48% or so of pregnancies are unintentional. About 20% of those unintended pregnancies go on to abortion.

Disclaimer: these statistics are off the top of my head, so they might be incorrect. Just had an exam on this in med school.
