He is the main character's dad. Throughout the movie Costner's character is struggling with his feelings surrounding their relationship, and his own success as a husband and father. He's facing bankruptcy and feels like he is a failure and a disappointment. In a moment of desperation, after hearing a mysterious voice, Costner plows over his failing corn field and starts to build a baseball field. His father was a professional ball player in life, and in building the Field of Dreams, Costner's character is able to make peace with the memory of his father and his own life. The haunted baseball field draws lots of attraction and the money raised through the visitors saves the family farm.
