Ego death doesn't allow to retrieve falsifiable information from the hypothetical pool of "egoless minds in the Universe", so that it can't be said what is really happening; it might just be, and skepticals indeed would say it is, just a failure of the system, like a computer that stops working.

If there's a collective pool of Consciousness then clear proof must be provided. For example if telepathy were real, then a theoretical underpinning might imply a field upon which such communication can be established, and ego death (turning off a firewall), might provide access to such a field (Internet). But then again something in you has to be able to dive in. In other words my opinion is that ego death is only a first step, the turning off of the firewall, but merging implies the use of a vehicle (software) and the understanding of the mechanics in the new field (Internet protocols). In which case it should be possible to retrieve falsifiable information even in telepathy tests under lab conditions.
