If the most common delusion is the belief that you are Jesus Christ, the son of god, perhaps the original Jesus was the first person to have that delusion.

It is quite possible, because of the little known information on mental disorders at the time, as well as the gullibility of people to worship idols that offered a door to the afterlife. The hardships faced then compared to now where probably the biggest encouragement by many to believe there could be hope of blissful eternity. In turn religious "disciples" were able to bring members together like grazing cattle because they spoke of things man has not yet encountered such as miracles described in the bible. Not to hate on anyone else's religion, but the pitch back then seems to me almost like the sales tactics used to get people to buy useless remedies and cure-all's like in the early days of modern society. Basically to sum up what I am saying is that during this time humans lacked the enlightenment we have today thanks to science and proper analysis, that most took hear-say as the truth. Therefore an insane man was not really second guessed because there was no method at that time to judge sanity. This is all my opinion and I hope I do not get a shitstorm in my inbox for this post, but in all honesty believe what you want to believe. Nobody else should tell you what is wrong/right because nobody on Earth has all the answers. It is for this reason we are warned of History and its tendency to repeat itself. Phony religions and false idols have been used consciously in the past as well as today to commit horrible acts against humanity. Look into the man in Russia who believes he is Jesus reincarnated. If not delusion, man has used willingly , religion as power. This is what we'd call a "cult". Look into Jonestown, which was a society led by a maniac promising a peaceful existence which ended in the deaths of almost all of the members.
