If NASA paid you $10,000 to stay in bed for 90 days, would you do it? Why/Why not?

I agree, but there are a few things I’d change about the calculation.

  • You’re going to be sleeping for 8 hours a day, in a bed, whether at home or doing the study. So it’s more like 16 hours per day.

  • You wouldn’t have to pay rent/utilities/car insurance/food for 3 months. Most monthly services can probably be put on hold, and assuming you have wifi you wouldn’t even need to pay a phone bill. These costs are dependent on lifestyle and location though, so will obviously vary. My savings personally would be somewhere around $1600/mo. Therefore total compensation + direct savings is maybe closer to ~$15000.

So instead: 16hours*90days=1440hours $15000/1440hours = $10.42/hr

Which seems more reasonable for your time. The deciding factor then becomes whether you are willing to suffer the mental and physical aspects of being bedridden for so long.
