If you pay me for 40 hours you get 40 hours

I’ve always been #1, 2 or 3 departing the office in a building of 200+ people. Why? I work efficiently, get the job done in the time allotted and prioritize the work. It’s also why my workload gets divided 2 to 3 times when I depart a company for greener pastures.

Some years back I listened closely when older employees who had gone through 2-3 divorces remarked, “Never stay late whether it’s a minute or an hour. Go home and spend time with your SO.” I’ve mostly stuck to that advice unless it meant the difference between helping a friend or potentially sacrificing my career (so, maybe a handful of times that I have stayed late, which is equivalent to once a year or every other year).
