If a smoker/addict gets amnesia are they still addicted?

Depends on what you are addicted to:

  • smoking: lot of it is based on learned patterns, the addiction is more psychical than physical
  • opioids: no you won't get "unaddicted" after amnesia. Opioid addiction diminishes effects of mju, delta opioid receptors mostly and raises tolerance and depending on how addicted you are you could just feel all the your pain receptors burning, holes growing in bones, burning tongue, thousands of needles being stuck into your skin...
  • severe addiction to alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates: you could die of seizure, due to GABA/glutamate imbalance
  • dopaminergic amphetamines: you could probably feel drop in mood, paranoias, but thouse should go away after some not too long time (if your tolerance wasn't sky high)
