If you know your history... part 2 - 1903-1918

I’ve actually had to miss out one of my favourite stories from the period. In the Celtic trophy room today there’s a trophy engraved “won by Rangers FC”

In 1901 Rangers won the Glasgow International exhibition cup. The following year was the year of the first Ibrox disaster, and to raise money in the wake of that, Rangers decided to host a competition. They played and beat Everton while we beat Sunderland 5-1, setting up a Celtic - Rangers final. We beat them after extra time and went away with the trophy, as you’d expect any team to do after winning a competition.

At the end of the season though Rangers got the lawyers involved. Apparently they expected it to be returned to them because they won it in 1901 and the tournament we won it in wasn’t actually the Glasgow International Exhibition Cup.

It’s actually rumoured that over a century later, Rangers and their lawyers were still after the trophy.
