I'll stayi in the East village. Do I need to use Subway to walk in Manhattan or can I just walk?

There really aren’t any dangerous areas in Manhattan. Some people would recommend that tourists stay away from Harlem, but even that area isn’t so bad.

New York City is one of the safest cities in the world, with crime declining every year. By way of comparison, Brazil has a murder rate of 30.8 murders per 100,000 people, while in New York City there were only 286 homicides in all of 2017, or about three murders per 100,000 people.

So by that measure, if you feel safe walking in Brazil, you can feel 10x as safe walking in New York.
