It's a prisoner's dilemma of sorts. If we all agreed to stop having full-time jobs, then we'd soon not need them. We'd all have to increase our sale price to compensate for that lost income. But once someone starts subsidizing their operation with outside income, everyone else has to try and compete with that.

But, personally, I like having multiple jobs. Aside from not having to put all eggs in one basket, which could be mitigated, I like the variety. Farming is fun, but so is the other work I do. I don't know that I'd want to give it up at this point in my life, even if the farm could support me wholly.

Realistically, I feel you have to model farming on an hourly basis. Especially in my type of farming, which only keeps me busy for a few months of the year. My goal is to keep (net income / time spent) to be at least at a level I would be happy receiving at a different job on an hourly basis. If you're making less than that for prolonged periods (there are always ups and downs), it is time to reevaluate.
