I'm an American living in Mexico for the past 2 years, AMA.

1.) how do you like Mexico?

I absolutely love it. I love where I live, the people I see every day, the culture, the food, the attitudes, it's all been very positive for me.

2.) do you know the language?

Yes. I took Spanish classes in the past, and for several years I worked in kitchens and the like alongside people that spoke little to no Spanish. I picked up a lot of Spanish that way. I would not say I am completely fluent in Spanish but I have no problem communicating with people or reading stuff.

3.) have you made any friends?

Yes, many. Everyone is very friendly.

4.) what is a good food to eat in Mexico that has not been Americanized?

Well, Mexican food of course. Mexican food down here is nothing like I've ever seen my entire life in America, and it's much much better. I'd say my favorite meal consists of brown rice, black refried beans, and shrimp fajitas. With a side of chips and salsa (which is unlike chips and salsa in America)

5.) give me a full opinion on how Mexico is than how Mexico is portrayed by Americans?

Like every country it's got its positives and negatives. It's still a developing country in many senses, but it's proximity and relationship with the US has set it better off than many other Latin American countries. It is NOT all a corrupt violent place that you hear about. There are places where organized crime exists and which people know not to go to. You wouldn't go to Compton, Detroit, or Gary Indiana for instance, and we have that here. Most of the casualties in drug conflicts are the criminals themselves. Corruption is unfortunately a problem in many places.

In general, the people here are extremely friendly and helpful. It is a much more laid back society than America which I love.

I feel very secure where I live. I walk the streets at night not feeling unsafe. The economy is growing and things are looking up.

In short, most of Mexico is just a bunch of people trying to get on with their lives just like everyone else. Not everyone is not poor although poverty is a big problem. For every poor person I see there's also some Mexican teenagers driving a late model range rover blasting hip hop. Family life in Mexico is very important and there is a big Catholic influence.
