I'm considering getting a Great Dane...what are some pros and cons?

I would absolutely recommend a Dane if you want an awesome dog. Here's a couple of things I learned from my own experience:

  1. You feet will get stepped on, and it actually hurts sometimes
  2. During the puppy phase, you're gonna catch some paws to the face. Hard.
  3. Huge poop. We're talking grocery bags, not dog poop bags.
  4. Couch covers will save you from having to wash your furniture on a constant basis.
  5. On that subject, Danes use your furniture as if they were human. I dare you to try to train the animal otherwise. Good luck to you.
  6. Not all Danes but most are very uneasy and anxious on car rides. Same goes for water hoses, bubble wrap and firearms.
  7. Nail care requires a powered rotary tool of some kind. Good luck with traditional methods.
  8. You need elevated food dishes.
  9. You have to pay for a gut surgery(typically done when spade/neutered), in order to prevent the intestine to getting twisted up, commonly a fatal scenario.
  10. You have to accept the real possibility that your Dane will live a much shorter life than normal dogs. My female only lived 6 years because of an enlarged heart. (Also very very common)
