I'm doing an ethnography; what does Vaporwave culture mean to you?

What does it mean to you? A surrealist cyberpunk-influenced art and music movement that has amazing potential to be something special and reflective of this weird and amazing time we live in, but is quickly being overtaken by lazy slowed down 80's songs by producers with no technical skill or artistic vision

What does it take to be a member of vaporwave culture? Be online a lot

Is feeling that Macintosh Plus is overrated a means of achieving 'elite' cultural status? No, I think people just find it overrated because it's the album that gets most attention due to its crossover success on Youtube, while being one of the more mediocre releases to come out of the genre and even Vektroid's own work.

Are you mostly devoted to vaporwave or find many fellow 'wavers including yourself involved in many of the same non-vaporwave interests? The vaporwave community is a really diverse place that brings together people from all walks of life with varied interests and influences, I have never encountered another music scene like it

Is there a subculture that lead you to discover Vaporwave? Nope, just got linked some stuff by a friend one day and explored further until I got sucked in

How would you best describe the core values behind Vaporwave? There are no core values because it's too diverse to be narrowed down. Vaporwave today is effectively an empty word that acts as an umbrella term for several different styles of music

What sets this micro-genre apart from others? Micro-genre is a huge misnomer, nor is it even a genre anymore. See above answer

What medium/application do you use for music-listening? I stream on Bandcamp/Youtube/Soundcloud mostly, otherwise VLC

Do you speak/read Japanese? No, but I've picked up a few terms from vaporwave

Would you describe your taste in music more serious or comical? Don't really understand the question, why would anyone have a comical taste in music?
