I'm looking into getting birth control for the first time, are all the horror stories here true?

If by horror stories you mean accidental pregnancies while on the pill, those are entirely user error. Pretty much 100% of the time, if someone got pregnant on the pill it's because they weren't as diligent in taking it as they thought they were. They probably missed a day or two occasionally or took a few pills late here and there. That's called being a "typical" user, which puts you at 91% or so covered from pregnancy.

However, it's really not difficult to be a "perfect" user which puts you at over 99% protected. I don't understand why articles and even this sub use language that assumes everyone on the pill occasionally misses one or takes one late, because that's not the case. My gf has an alarm on her phone and takes her BC pill every night at the same exact minute and has never missed a single one, it's really not that hard if you're responsible.

If you make sure to take your pill at the same time everyday and not miss any, you're not going to get pregnant.
