I'm reading a japanese crime novel, and the small cultural differences from an European perspective tend to kick me out of the story.

I'll bet you a fiver that all the SFNF you read is largely western in origins or imitates that. It's still within your cultural context.

Pretty bad bet since a lot of modern fantasy is Japanese and is massively popular in the west. Recently The Three-Body Problem is written by a Chinese author and had huge success in SF circles. Likewise Black Leopard, Red Wolf is from a Jamaican author and largely draws on African history saw massive success. I'm sure there are plenty more but I don't read a lot of SF&F.

However I do agree with /u/ChimoEngr, I read a lot of foreign novels and I've never experienced being 'kicked out' of a story. Recently I've been reading everything by Edogawa Ranpo and haven't had the same experience of OP.
