I'm a senior in high school with no idea where I want to go to college. My parents have told me they can help very little, as I have 2 brothers and their expenses. I'm seriously scared because I don't want to be in debt for the rest of my life and the deadline is coming up.

How to make college as cheap as possible.

  1. Start at a community college. Make sure you attend one that has an articulation agreement with a local four year university. This basically means that if you choose they will take allow you to transfer all of your credits.
  2. Don't le your parents claim you on your taxes. File you own taxes and complete the fafsa. Show as little income as possible. You will be elligible for close to if not the full Pell Grant of 5500 per year. If you have to extend your Associates through your community college to 3 years so that you can take advantage of pell 3 times. This should be enough to cover close to or even the full tuition.
  3. Transfer to Four year college. Do not live on campus. Work as much as you can as a full time student. Pay off as much of your student loans as you can as you are progressing through your program.
  4. Pick a major with an actual high projected job growth over the next ten years by checking out http://www.onetonline.org/ You can view career and income data as well as the number of people currently employed in professions as well as how many projected openings there will be until 2022. Look at things like Public Health, Nursing, Accounting, Project Management etc. Also don't just simply do and BSBA if you are interested in business. Instead seek a program more specialized such as Business Communications or Marketing. Seek a program that you can bridge to a Masters. Many colleges will offer 5 year masters that combine undergrad and graduate programs together. These save time and money and will make what you invest in a universities program worth your time and money.
  5. Work with your schools career services center to begin developing your resume and interviewing techniques. Seek and internship if possible. Also make sure you join organizations related to your major so that you can add that to your resume.
