I'm surprised to find out that PC gamers also buy consoles

That's assuming that everyone would buy a new desktop whenever they want to upgrade their gaming solution.

Even if they did I find more people are interested in a laptop, tablet, or just using their phones when it comes to basic computing because they can take it to work/school/etc or sit on the couch with it and they don't need a dedicated workspace in the house. Gaming laptops get expensive quick when compared to a basic one and they often don't have the longevity when it comes to gaming because they are difficult or impossible to upgrade. Tablets/phones aren't really an option for gamers outside the high end windows tablets but again price escalates.

Besides that a new PC has far more processing power than basic computer use requires (which is why a cheap windows tablet can often take its place) and has had for quite a long time now. Why replace a desktop that doesn't have any issues and at what point is it impractical to upgrade an older rig?
