I'm thinking about the Foreign Service, and am looking to get general thoughts/feedback

I'll definitely agree that most FS jobs, whether overseas or domestic, don't involve a ton of travel and a lot of people come in with unrealistic ideas of what FS lifestyle will be like. But, most overseas FS jobs will involve at least some travel, often to places that are different than where you might go for work trips if you work a normal job in the USA.

I've not had a job in the FS that involved a ton of super-exotic travel, and have never been jet setting from Milan to Dubai to Tokyo or anything, but every FS job I've had has involved in-country travel for events (consular outreach, meetings with organizations outside of the capital city, public speaking events in other cities, country-wide conferences, etc.) and some have involved occasional travel to 3rd countries for training/conferences.

Also, I've been able to take some nice, short, personal trips in-country or to nearby countries that would have been either cost or time prohibitive if I were based in the USA.

FS work is mostly normal office work, just in another country, and it's important to be realistic about that. But, most overseas FS jobs will offer different travel opportunities than one would have at home, even if it's not as glamorous as people may envision.
