Imagine being kicked out when you turn 18.

I don't think you're wrong. I got into it with my mom, a baby boomer, last month (we don't talk much) on the subject of college. She had just gone to my cousin's high school graduation and was bent out of shape at her brother because rather than retiring early, he decided to continue working for an additional four years to put her through college.

I said, "good on him".

She scoffed, "What are you talking about? That's so stupid. He could retire but instead he's wasting four years of his life when she could just take out student loans."

I said, "I know you couldn't help out with our college because you were a single parent so I don't blame you, but if you can afford to keep your kid from starting their life out in a mountain of debt, you should."

She said, "Even if I was rich, I wouldn't have paid for your college. Once you're 18, you're on your own."

It kind of devolved from there, but the selfishness in that view just amazes me. No qualms about putting a teenager up to their eyeballs in debt even when you could afford not to. Imo if you want kids, you should be prepared for what it costs to give them a decent life.
