Imagine if the daughter of an immigrant posted a picture with an assault rifle

I get downvoted for this in all the pro gun subs but I'm all for very strict background checks. I don't think limiting magazine capacity or banging certain guns that function that same as any other because they look like scary assault rifles. I'd be fine with background checks requiring mental health checks and even getting rechecked every so often. I own a fully automatic machine gun. Something most liberals don't even know people can legally own. The reason they don't know is because to own these items, which are considered "NFA items" due to a law make in '86 is because they are more expensive, require special paperwork, and can take up to a year to procure. Only collectors are buying them. They aren't used in crimes. This past school shooting was with a 38 revolver and an old shotgun. Something somebodys grandpa has in a closet somewhere in their bloodline.

Would banning guns work in the very long term? Maybe. But it would be very long term. There are already so many guns out there that banning them would go as well as banning alcohol did. It would all go underground. Theres a common phrase in the gun community as a joke if the government were to try to take all of our guns (which are registered) and it's that we lost all of our guns in the ocean in an unfortunate boating accident.

As to what I honestly believe as a liberal gun hobbiest, if I could give up my guns to insure no shootings would ever happen then I'd be all for it. However that's not the case and I prefer to own guns because I can protect my family. I don't always conceal carry but I have a permit and sometimes do, because I'd happily give my life to save my family. No, I'm not police or special forces and 99% of people who carry guns know that Rule 1 in an active shooter situation is to get away. You only pull your gun if you need to. But if training and mental health checks and a lot of effort is required, maybe someone like me can actually do some good.

I rambled, but hopefully answered your question. If not or if I can clarify anything please let me know. I've never voted for a republican president in my life (I thought this might be the year if it wasnt for Trump because I wasn't a Hillary fan either).
