It is immoral for god to put his own desire to be loved over our well being

Not the guy you were talking to, but I mostly agree with his position on worship being a bad thing and inherently making somebody worse for having demanded it. I would say worship is performing actions out of and in order to express reverence or adoration for a thing.

This would go beyond gratitude and thanks, as one might have towards ones parents. I can't quite put my finger on the right words to express the nature of thee mentality behind "worship" as opposed to "gratitude", but the distinction is definitely there in the concepts (many people feel and express gratitude to parents, but outside of rare cases of abuse you would not find them worshipping their parents).
