IMO Mass Effect Andromeda is the best mass effect since Mass Effect 2.

As someone who spent little time playing the original trilogy, I went into the trial expecting a grand space opera RPG on par with previous games I've loved like DA:O and the earlier Fallout games. Instead this felt a whole lot more like Fallout 4 to me. I still enjoyed playing through Fallout 4 since I love the universe and they had memorable side quests, but it was still disappointing.

I may have had the wrong expectations, as it seems that ME:A is simply a very solid action/adventure game that they crammed inside the skeleton of an RPG. Conversation, much like in Fallout 4, seems completely pointless, giving you options only for flavor but none that have any actual impact. It also sounds like you can't really change the way Ryder acts, and that you're essentially playing Bioware's character how they intended. I don't think there's anything wrong with that in many genres, but I prefer an RPG where I have more control over my own character.

Maybe I was just mistaken in what to expect out of a Mass Effect game, but for me it felt like this game would have been much better if they cut out the almost entirely meaningless RPG elements and focused on making it a Gears/Halo-esque action adventure game in the Mass Effect universe.

I'm sure there are fans of the series who don't mind the mmo style quests or subpar writing, just as I enjoy Inquisition even though opinions are mixed on that, but as an outsider to the series I can certainly see why it has bad reviews.
