I was sheltered, but my family wasn't exactly large. I married a guy with similar facial features and skin color as my dad, but he also has the personality (kinda) of myself and my two older cousins... mostly sense of humor and interests.

My (fundie, large family) cousins married people with personality traits they saw displayed around them, but they didn't physically resemble themselves. They married addicts, manipulative people and people with developmental issues (not that it's a bad thing, they just ended up being caregivers and didn't expect that.) Developmental delays, drug abuse and financial/emotional abuse run rampant in the family. If there were more people in their 'league' that resembled their parents I could see them seeing that as a positive thing.
