Indiana bro here: What RFRA actually does.

The primary in Indiana is the first Tuesday, after the first Monday in May. This fact important to understanding Indiana's low voter turnout. You see, for most counties in Indiana the Republican primary IS the general election.

In perhaps a majority of Indiana counties, there will be almost NO Democrats on the ballot. The few Democrats that run will often be second rate candidates. There are talented Democrats in the state, they know the game is rigged so they don't try. Worse, many Democrats, and Libertarians are worried there would be consequences for admitting their political leanings publicly.

What is the date of the Indiana primary election this year? Don't look up at the top of the post. You see, this is EXACTLY what happens. If you have a job, or busy going to school, or even have kids, you won't keep track. You'll see some signs around, but you will be too busy to care. Tada, you just missed the Indiana primary election, and for most Hoosiers that effectively IS the general election.

The voters who do make it to the polling station are mostly old folks who watch fox news and they are scared of young people in general (meaning less than 50 years old), the internet, daylight savings time, marijuana, skateboards, people who don't speak english ... etc etc, and they want to BAN THEM ALL ... HECK MAKE IT A FELONY ... LOCK THEM UP FOREVER! Add in a healthy dose of Republican oprichniks, and the folks who have Republican patronage jobs or contracts then you have another predetermined election. Just the way they have always been. Indiana is the Mississippi of the North. The KKK only took over one state, Indiana.

Other electoral tactics include:

  • The hide and go seek polling station (if you live in a more democratic precinct)
  • Putting the "hard on crime" jerks in the off year elections for example sheriffs, prosecutors, and judges.
  • Keeping very short hours at the polling stations, making it tough if you have a job, and or kids to get there.
