Why individual lifestyle changes aren't useful in combating the climate crisis

I agree with you that widespread change has to come from big business, no doubt. But I think people have certain moral obligations to change some aspects of their behaviour for the greater good (abstaining from meat, opting for more efficient modes of travel are two examples).

Individual ignorance and stubbornness may be less of a problem then big corps raping the planet, but if someone is socially minded enough to want change for the benefit of everyone it always surprises me when they adopt such a defeatist attitude towards individual effort.

I think your friend was right in suggesting people should make individual efforts, but you're also right in suggesting that a large responsibility lies with the big dogs in charge.
