Ineffective & outdated: Six reasons to not hang a bear bag

The problem bear spots don't really change, it's been the same areas for years. Jerrard Gap, Low Gap, the Smokies, Watauga Lake, NJ, etc. Obviously it's a heated topic, for some strange reason, based on all the downvotes.

Bears aren't coming around because of people not hanging bear bags, they are coming around to heavily trodden locations that are publicly accessible. These people that frequent these locations don't hang bear bags, they litter and fuck it up leaving behind food, trash, and all manner of refuse. Places like the Smokies have lockboxes and bear cables for a reason, because they don't trust the average hiker to know what they are doing, and the area itself doesn't lend itself to being able to do it properly.

I think Skurka is dead on, and I firmly believe that a bear is less likely to come into your tent - unless you're in one of these public areas the bears are used to - and take your food. I'll continue to tie my Ursack off to a tree a ways from camp. You'll never find me throwing line and trying to hang a bag. What a fucking waste of time for damn near zero benefit.
