International students and jobs.

So, I'm an international student but I'm not in the COE (Disclaimer, i'm in business). I recently received a full-time offer with a company that is taking a chance on me :). I agree with some of the things said below but I can't agree with all of it. As a STEM major, you have three years of OPT that you can use. Companies know that. That gives them a good 4 (i believe) windows to sponsor you for an H1B. And they also know that it is harder for you to switch jobs when you are tied to a company through the h1b. So there is actually an upside to firms hiring international students.

BUT.. let me talk about the issues I have seen with many other international students. They don't network. They don't push themselves outside their comfort zone. Trust me, I learnt this late in college. I got no love from employers for years. Then I realized it wasn't enough for me to just go to career fair and apply online. I started going to every event a company I liked had. I talked to people about real things. Sports, food etc. I actually got to know people. And employers responded well to that. I now have a few companies that I am interviewing for and I think regardless of where I end up, I will retain my connections with those from the other firms.

Also, make an effort to present yourself well. Try to show that you are suited to the culture here. I see WAYYY too many international students (chinese, indian especially) who show up at career fairs looking like horse sh*t. Dirty suits, loose ties, terribly fitting clothes. It is baffling. Why the hell will an employer want to consider you if you can't dress well. Btw I get it. The tech world has a different vibe blah blah. But, there is still a certain degree of presentation that is involved. As an international student, you HAVE to go above and beyond. Also make sure you are as fluent as possible in English. (This may not apply to you but it's still important). That means PRACTICE your fucking english. Don't yap away in mandarin for half the day with your friends. You won't improve.

Last, check your resume. I apologize but I do have to echo what some people have said here. You should be getting interviews with side projects and a GPA that high. You are doing something wrong. And try not taking offense to this, it is likely your group of friends are suffering from the same issues since friends influence each other's behavior. I know many international students in CS /ECE that got full-time offers at companies in SF and Chicago.

I'm not targeting you specifically with anything in this post. These are things that I have noticed in other students. I just get infuriated because I believe other international students can do great things but they just don't have the soft skills and aren't willing to improve on the little things.
