Interviewing with non standard looks: unnatural hair, visible tattoos or piercings, etc.

I have blue hair. I recently interviewed for a position as a sommelier and before the interview, I asked what their dress code was regarding hair and grooming (not uncommon for fine dining to be strict about dress/grooming). I live in a very liberal city. Their policy was that it's OK to be covered in visible tattoos but not OK to have blue hair. I had my hair lady strip the color out of my hair and dyed it dark brown over... it covered it up enough for the interview. I ended up not taking the job because FUCK any employer who dictates how I wear my hair, especially when it's OK to have other alternative styles that are far more permanent. I kept my job where I'm at now, and I will forever be known as the cool af operations manager with the blue hair.
