Into the Jaws of Death

This is pure and simple death. The void into which these soldiers walked into was decided only by their own actions, with death weighing heavily in its own favor. There is no way any of them could have been absolutely sure that they would have made it out alive, yet they went anyway. I am a current U.S. paratrooper, and though I might have made the same commitment at one point or the other, I can say that these people are true men. No man, I mean no man, walks to his own death without being a brave one. And the deaths of these men were almost certain. Nowadays, your death is highly unlikely, and I sleep well knowing that my own death is highly unlikely.

These men, however, had something to fight against. They had a purpose. A purpose they were truly willing to give their lives for. Modern technology didn't save them. No one was there to help when the machine guns opened fire. No one was guaranteed to save them once they were lying on the beach in a pile of their own guts. These men gave everything they had to stop true evil.

It is these men that I look up to. I only hope that I can equal their shadows.
