Iowa: how many Covd19 deaths? It gets complicated, more in comments

Thanks for all that information. From what I took away from reading all that, the CDC is counting deaths that have Covid in the part II section that reads "Enter other significant condition contributing to death but not resulting in the underlying cause in part 1", but the state of Iowa is only counting it as a death if Covid is listed anywhere in part 1 section that is pretty much a time line of causes that lead to what killed them. It all seems very complicated to determine. They gave good examples of Covid being an underlying cause in part 1, but no examples of Covid being the contributing factor to death in part II of the death certificate. I can't really wrap my head around how Covid could contribute to the death, but not be a direct cause in the sequence of their death.
