iPhone XS; broken in box

Went and upgraded from my 8 plus to a shiny new Space Grey XS yesterday at Verizon. Verizon’s service was terrible and all I wanted to do was get home and play with it and lo and behold the FaceID won’t set up. I went through numerous hard and soft reboots, different iOS versions (I have public beta access so I thought it might be a software issue), and several restores before I said screw it, I’m going back to Verizon. Went there today and my oh my now they can’t do anything for me. Their suggestion was “pay for the insurance and get the tech support app”. I explained that I had had the phone for less than 24 hours but still there was nothing they could do. Finally got fed up and went through the apple support chat tonight who informed me that a) the FaceID sensor is failing and b) the device is out of date. Now I have a date at the Genius Bar for them to tell me they’re either going to charge me to repair my new phone or replace it with another one.

This is a $1,000+ phone that is, as of the time of this post, 36 hours old to me. I understand that there will always be manufacturing defects and that doesn’t really bother me. What irks me to no end is Verizon’s piss-poor service with the issue. Why do we pay so much money for a premium product and service to be shit on.
