Sorry, these guys are all religious. I'm certain if you sat a group of them down and asked them to describe their religious convictions, all will identify as Muslim. The declaration of the Islamic faith is written right on their flag. They're destroying any religious structures/artifacts that aren't Islamic. You're very much in denial if you think these guys are all atheists.

ISIS is a political organization but they use religion as recruitment tool. Their message is essentially: no matter where you reside, if you're Muslim, you should identify with us. This is what gets disenfranchised youth to pick up and leave Indonesia, France, etc. to join these guys. They aren't making an appeal to people's sense of reason, they aren't simply offering money... They're using religion to recruit because it's effective.

Many of us see religion (in this case, Islam) as at its best, a harmless superstition, and at its worst, an ideology used to recruit people into a terrorist organization and used as justification for horrible acts once within its ranks, and therefore feel the world would be better off without it. There's a finite list of ideologies that can be used in this way and it's time we started crossing items off that list.

I don't think anyone said "I hate Muslims" -- the criticism is of the ideology, not the people who believe in it. You're just throwing Muslims out as sort of a human-shield so you can turn around and make accusations of racism. It's an intellectually lazy move...

We can criticize other ideologies: communism, racism, sexism, fascism without de-humanizing those who harbor these beliefs. Religion is no different.
