Isn’t water clarity completely relative? How do you decide what water is clear and what is stained/murkey?

So I’ve been up north and fished in water that was obviously “clear” relative to anything I’ve fished in my home state. I’ve also seen water that is obviously murky and muddy.

But say you’re fishing in Tennessee. The bodies of water here will pretty much never look as clear as they do in the far northern states.

So when choosing a lure shade/strategy, would it be correct to assume that all fishing in Tennessee is best done under the assumption that the water doesn’t have great visibility for fish?

To add to this, I’ve always astronomically better success here with dark brown or black lures. You can catch fish on just about anything, but dark lures have been king for me during pretty much any conditions or any time of day.

Just wondering what you guys think?
