iTunes is 13 years old—and it’s still awful

Apple has no idea how users actually want to work. Maybe it's just me but I still think of my media files as distinct assets. All I want to do is to be able to sort and access my assets as fast as possible using metadata. Apple is going down this path where they are really confusing the whole relationship between users and their assets. I have no fucking idea how my iTunes library works anymore — same goes with Photos. I know my assets are in there but I've lost all control over how I interface with them. Not to mention when I search for music in iTunes now, the default search target is the iTunes Store and not my own library. No thanks. I couldn't even begin to tell you how my photos are sorted. "All Photos?" "Moments?" How about letting me search by geolocation or letting me keep everything organized in one single place on my own terms. Why is there even a distinction between "All Photos" and "Moments?" The problem is that Apple sets up these arbitrary methods of organization and gives users no control in overriding them. You just have to eat shit and work around it.

Without having some element of control over how my assets are organized anymore it's like I've lost an important part of my connection with those assets. iTunes and Photos are now completely alien and unappealing to me even though I grew up with computers and should be able to work with almost any asset management interface. It's frustrating to the point of sincere aggravation because they just keep shutting doors and leaving users stranded in this Apple-created wasteland. It's not like I enjoy installing 3rd party solutions for the basics — I would love for Apple to cover all of its bases well — but when other companies are putting more thought and effort into their products at some point you just have to say fuck it. As time goes on Jonny Ive keeps looking more and more like a fraud. With all those resources at their disposal how the hell is this situation acceptable?
