I get James is making himself feel better and all, why are webisodes “films”?

I definitely can't argue with some of that take.

Putting myself in Mike's shoes though, imagine having a long time friend who made a funny video about a game he had bad memories of as a kid.

You thought it was pretty good and put it on this new video sharing website. Suddenly, it goes crazy viral, You're getting emails and messages from strangers.

Wanting to strike when the iron's hot, and knowing that your friend knows next to nothing about games and hasn't really played a non-party game since they were a kid, You help him pick out games, you record footage, you drive to every Funcoland in New Jersey to buy games for the reviews, you write scripts, etc.

Despite all the work you're putting in, and the success and adoration your friend is getting who doesn't really care about games at all and wouldn't be in this situation if you hadn't uploaded the video online, practically no one knows you exist.

Skipping a bunch of time, You've managed to work yourself into some cameos and a role in a side series, but your buddy is becoming more and more disconnected from making the videos as he marries, has kids, and pursues other interests.

Every Monday, you have to sit with this guy and play games and try to think of ways of making him interact with you in more than one word sentences.

You start streaming online, but no matter what you do you can never match his level of fame, no matter how much more work than him you put in.

I know that if I was him I would have this driving envy and feel like I was the one responsible for the success.

Maybe I feel this way because the situation feels a little too close to home, of my closest friends, both of them moved to California to pursue their dreams, one of them ended up working for Google and is very well off, and the other one is now working for Activision Blizzard, making games like we always talked about doing, and here I am working as a schlub to support my family in the middle of the rust belt.
