Japanese American and relation with other Asian Americans?

I'm of Chinese-Vietnamese descent and learning about Asia prior to the 19th Century, what struck me the most was the cosmopolitan nature of Southeast and East Asia throughout history relative to Europe. There were Japanese communities in Vietnam and Cambodia as much as in China due to trade. I would hope people find that they have more in common actually than differences. My mom can understand some Japanese through knowing Chinese writing. I know the Three Kingdoms story as much as someone in Korea or Japan does. Even some of the most popular anime-style games made in China that have made it big have settled on Japanese as the Lingua Franca of anything anime related.
