Jason Schreier on Twitter: "In the last few weeks I've actually talked to two different indie devs whose deals with Epic ensure that no matter how many copies they sell, they'll at least break even--a rare bit of stability in a volatile industry."

the product you are buying is not compromised in the slightest

This would be true if I never had to touch the "store" I purchased the thing in ever again. But game launchers aren't standard, every day stores where you buy the thing, put it on your own shelf, and do what you want with it. Every time you want to use the thing you purchased, you have to effectively "walk back into the store" and confirm your copy is valid. The store can even give this some benefit by providing elements you couldn't get in the product elsewhere. In Steam's case things is things like cloud saves, mod features, marketplace, game time tracking, etc.

To that end EGS has one massive red flag in the sense of account security. I had an account with them I never used on a very much secondary email address I've only used in a few places. It still received a half dozen "you failed a login attempt" emails. People can sign up for an account with my email addresses and not have to authenticate it. So when you go back to that "I have to walk back into the store" part, it's clear the product is actually at risk of being compromised.
