Jerry Lawson, African American engineer who pioneered the video game cartridge

This is a silly comment my guy.

Just under 1/2 engineers and scientists in this country (based on 2015 data admittedly) are white men, and with women added its 57%.. I don't disagree that assuming engineers are by default white is problematic, but I also struggle to see how the title implies that at all. There IS a huge racial disparity among engineers and scientists, and Black Americans are underrepresented in this field, this is a fact. It's being explicitly stated because 1. the Black community is going through a time of difficulty and stress right now and celebrating their accomplishments can be a place of comfort for Black Americans and can be a way to show solidarity with them and 2. Lawson succeeded despite these odds. The chances of him becoming an engineer as a black man was lower than if he were born white. Its important to celebrate these accomplishments, as rare as they are, to help inspire and usher in change for this field.
