Why is Jewel ripping out its self-service registers and moving back to employee-operated 'express lanes?'

I work at a Jewel and my local store still has them. They don't save as much time as you think they do, most people take more time to scan and bag than we do but don't realize it, even the ones that think they're fast, we can see you and even time you, you're slow.We also compare checkout times, cashier lines always destroys self checkout on average. Most of our customers seem to forget how lines work and that causes a lot of problems too.

Also, stop ripping us off, we can see you doing it! It's actually policy to not confront you because people can play it off as an accident and then file a complaint to corporate out of spite for not letting them steal(happens all the fucking time, people are awful). To give you an idea of how much theft was happening, every last department in our store had their shrink loss go down 15-30% in the first inventory we had after ditching them, that was record breaking. Because of the money saved from self checkout thieves being thwarted, my store can now afford to keep at least 5-6 lines open for most of the day and our lines and wait time has dropped, no matter what our pissy customers who don't like dealing with a checker say (they're not crazy about you either btw), we have to keep track of this believe it or not. What you guys say and what we see is different.

It might suck at first but it is better for everyone involved, no more bad inventories means managers will order more and that means fresher produce/meat to buy and even managers taking risks by bringing in new shit to try out. More hours for staff because the company isn't hemorrhaging money and also there being more shit that needs filling/organizing because of the increased deliveries. The thing is, people think in the now and not the bigger picture. Stop doing that, you're hurting yourself and are harder to deal with. You can't have the best convenience and the best quality, to get one you sacrifice the other. If a store tells you different, they're lying. I hope I don't sound like I'm trying to take my frustration on you, I'm not but you guys lost your self checkout privileges fair and square. We tried to make them work for as long as we could, but again people are awful and would always outdo themselves in dumbness and thievery.
