The hostage crisis is some major bullshit too. The reason it even happened was because we overthrew the first democratically elected leader of a sovereign country, Iran, in the 50s after colonial powers had already permanently fucked the middle east at the end of world war 1 with the Sykes-picot agreement. After like 20 years under the leader the US installed in the coup, Iranians revolted against him and the US extracted him from Iran where they wanted to try him for his crimes of using authoritarian military forces against his people. During the crisis, the Reagan administration including Bush Sr. negotiated with the Iranian radicals to delay the release of hostages to influence the 1980 election, then the hostages just magically happened to be released the day Reagan was inaugurated, after he had won using the hostage situation as a major campaign issue. In return, the Iranian radicals would be sold weapons once Reagan was in office, aka the Iran-Contra scandal. This was high treason. They put american lives in jeopardy and tried to undermine the presidents foreign policy to sway an election in their favor. And this situation is now considered a black mark on Carter.

The Iranian radicals who now controlled the state used these weapons to defend the Iraqi invasion in what ended up being an absolutely brutal war, because Khomeini was calling for Shia revolt across the arab world. Iraq also has a majority(?) Shia population and was being led by the secular leader Saddam and these calls for revolt combined with oil and the perception of Iran being weak due to a revolution made Saddam invade Iran and kicked off a massive proxy war where the gulf states backed Iraq along with the Soviets and some western countries, and the Reagan arming Iran. This massively destabilized the region and in the following years the Saudis(sunni) began to export state terror under the name of wahabism and salafism, and it's been downhill in MENA since then. Arguably all started by Reagan's actions to back a rebel group to win an election. And now Trump is tried to ban muslims from the country and ethno-nationalists across the western world are creating propaganda against Muslims to lump them all in to terrorist even though it's largely 2 massive epicenters of exported terrorism that were largely caused by the influence of western power.
