Agreed but you can always research in your free time (it's possible, believe it or not) and I'd say if a research job doesn't pay well, it's not worth doing. You need experience to get experience doing research though, so I'd say it's a moot point given it's unlikely most students with poor research records will be able to find a research job. Regardless, even if they are able, they certainly don't have to do it full time and I'm aware of several anecdotal experiences where full time workers in some impressive industries were able to do policy research and the like in their spare time.
