I'd like to chime in here with some evidence. My company recently sent out a Newsletter encouraging employees to use more Gender-Neutral Language in order to act more inclusively. While some of the suggestions made sense, there were some very outrageous suggestions that went as far as to oppose official vernacular utilized by various institutions. Some examples:

"Try saying First-Year Student instead of Freshmen"

and

"Try saying Congressional Leader instead of Congressmen"

and

"Try saying Humanity instead of Mankind" (this one is actually contradictory because the etymology of "Human" is derived from the Latin word for Man!)

Nonsensical/contradictory restrictions like this is what's getting people pissed off.
