John Oliver - Orlando Shooting

I'm a gay man who is upset with both Islam and Christianity. This is all about religious bigotry in my mind and the belief by these people that their religion trumps the rights of everyone else. That religion should be the most protected "protected class." The issue isn't Islam/Christianity, it's allowing religion to dominate politics and claim that they own the right to define morality.

Christians are attacking gay people (Google it, hundreds of cases such as throwing boiling water on a sleeping couple), denying access to goods and services, implementing bathroom bans for trans people, are still fighting against same sex marriage even though no Christian has been hurt by it, fight against same sex adoption rights, firing gay people and fighting against their right to be protected in the workplace, the lost goes on and on.

Muslims are doing similar things, albeit less frequently in the United States, but this attack is by far the worst attack against the LGBTQ* community in terms of lives lost.

These anti-gay sentiments are born of an extreme religious ideology that is becoming increasingly ingrained in politics. If you listen to some politicians, it's clear that they want Christian views to dominate law and society. Muslims do the same thing in countries where they are the majority. Calling out Christians for pushing these theocratic laws and for their blatent discrimination is important, and emphasizing how their viewpoints are slowly progressing to more severe acts of discrimination, is very important. However, it shouldn't come at the cost of ignoring how Muslim views are practically identical in this regard.

Yes, I know not all Christians are bigots, but they're certainly the ones who are getting all the voter support in the states that are pushing discrimination laws. Same holds true for Muslims. Not all Muslims are violent, but when there is a religiously motivated attack every week, maybe you should evaluate your belief system and make some pretty severe modifications to what message you are using to raise your kids. Also if you are a Christian or Muslim and you see your friends and family promoting a message of hate, speak out about it.

I may have hurt someone's feelings with what I've said, but this tragedy hurts. The constant discrimination against people like me, with religion used as the justification, fucking hurts.
